Something to Think About
A UNIFIED DEMOCRATIC PARTY IN NOVEMBER
(Reprinted from the DNC)
“The American people are overwhelmingly supporting Democrats
and, according to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll, on every major issue confronting our country. From the economy to the War on Terror, the American people trust Democrats to handle the problems that we face as a nation.
Republicans across the country delivered that Party’s nomination to John
McCain on Super Tuesday, and the White House to Democrats. John
McCain offers another Bush term on everything from Iraq, healthcare,
judicial appointments, taxes, and more. If you enjoyed the George
W. Bush presidency, you will love a McCain administration. It is the
closest thing to a third Bush term outside of re-electing Bush himself.
When we unite to support our Democratic Presidential nominee, whomever that may be, we will not only make history. We can set a new course for our country with the American people solidly behind us.”
Texans are fired up for November. Over the past two years, Democrats have picked up eight seats in the Texas House and swept Dallas County. We have laid the foundation that allows us to build on the momentum generated by the Texas Democratic debate, and we will put it to work to help us win in November.
After seven years of Republican neglect, the Texas Debate illustrated the best of what our Party has to offer. Senator Clinton and Senator Obama are offering specific proposals that address the issues and concerns that are most important to Texans and to all Americans. Our candidates at the state and local level are doing the same thing as we move to replace failed Republican leaders in the Texas House and in every County Courthouse across Texas.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Congratulations to Wilma and Ken Allen! They were recognized at the Texas Democratic Women 2008 Convention as Members of the Year for their contributions to TDW. They have been tireless in their efforts on behalf of the Democratic Party and for the full participation of women in the political process. Over and over again they give their time and their talents to the Party. We are very proud of you both and grateful for your many contributions.
At the February meeting, Dr. Daniel Bennett spoke on “Health Care Reform: The Uninsured and the Underinsured.” The issue is very complex and there are no easy answers.
The Democratic Party pledges that the U.S.A. will join 36 other industrialized nations in making sure everyone has access to affordable health care, starting by fixing the prescription drug program and investing in stem cell and other medical research.
In the wealthiest, most powerful nation on earth, no one should have to choose between taking their child to a doctor and paying the rent. Democrats are committed to making sure every single American has access to affordable, effective health care coverage. We want to fix the disastrous Medicare Part D and ensure our seniors can afford their prescription drugs.
Hats off to those of you who worked so hard in preparation for and execution of the Texas Primary. The voter turn-out, as everyone knows, was MASSIVE. This speaks to the dissatisfaction of Texans with the policies of the Republican administration. I am repeatedly approached by acquaintances who have told me that “I have come home to the Democratic Party.” or “ The Republican party has left me, and I am excited about what I see in your party.” The times they are a changing.
The Bell County Texas Democratic Women are again offering two college scholarships to area women for the 2008-2009 academic year. The purpose of the Women Helping Women BCTDW Scholarship Program is to empower young women by providing educational scholarships to enable them to become economically independent and to have choices regarding their futures. The Vada Sutton Scholarship and the Amigo Vasquez Bail Bonds Scholarship, each in the amount of $500.00, have been made possible through the endowment of their namesakes.
Applicants must be females residing in Bell County and graduating from high school this year, or currently attending college, or re-entering college. An application package may be requested from area school counselors or by calling Joan Hinshaw, Scholarship Committee Chair, at (254) 698-6944.
To be considered, applications must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2008. The two recipients will be presented with their scholarships at the Bell County Texas Democratic Women’s monthly meeting May 17th.
Thanks to Charlie Olson for his contribution to Friends of Bell County Texas Democratic Women. These funds will be used in our GOTV efforts.
Calling all cookie bakers. We have been asked by the Wounded Warrior Transition Unit if we could help them out by providing cookies for their upcoming Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 15th. They are doing a combined hunt with the kids of Darnall Hospital and the Wounded Warrior Transition kids. They are estimating around 100 kids, plus adults.
Joan Hinshaw will be taking the cookies to Ft. Hood on Friday March 14. Call Joan at (254) 681-0871. Thanks in advance for your generosity.
We need articles for publication in the Belton Journal. We can't let this opportunity get away especially going into the fall election season. Contact Nancy Glasscock at nancy.glasscock@yahoo.com or 780-9047 (home) or 722-5911 (cell).
